A very special thank you to Helms Design Center for generously hosting the event and partnering with L.A. GOAL and Inside Out Productions (IOP). Your support helped bring this vision to life.

What does Junktion mean to you? A crossroads? A fusion of ideas? A beautiful mess of creativity? L.A. GOAL artists, alongside community artists from across Los Angeles, explored these questions through more than 150 powerful works—celebrating innovation, connection, artists of all abilities, and the unexpected beauty of repurposed materials.

If you missed the in-person event—or want to experience it again—our virtual show is now live!

The boy and the mushroom

H. 8.2 W. 5.2 D. 5
Clay, oxides and underglazes
SOLD

Wonder and heartache are two emotions on opposite ends of the emotional spectrum that are universal. In 'The Boy and the Mushroom', the boy is depicted in a state of solitary wonder, only beginning to catch a glimpse of how vast the world of possibilities actually is. Perhaps, however, he does not yet understand how distant in the future he may feel the consequences of the decisions that he makes today.

The JUNKTION of Storytelling

by Melissa Falco Williams , Director of Fiber Arts
and Jeff Hansen, Fiber Arts Instructor

Our collective artwork, Junktion, is a meeting point of diverse styles, experiences, and narratives. By merging personal and professional perspectives, we explore how different techniques and concepts can come together to form a rich, layered dialogue about identity, culture, and perception.

The title emerged during an art staff meeting, capturing the spirit of L.A. GOAL as a creative space full of unexpected treasures. Through free-association exercises and improvisational storytelling—where one word sparks another—we invited our artists to embrace spontaneity and collaboration. The result is a playful, thoughtful mix of independent visions woven into a shared journey.

We hope you enjoy discovering the beauty in this intersection of ideas.

Cloud Vase
David Keeps
Ceramics
$100

When it comes to clay, I don’t believe in waste. I often take scraps and use them as decorative elements on pieces such as the porcelain vase I made with cloud-like shapes floating on the surface that add more visual interest and personality. Using so-called “junk” pieces in conjunction with the hand-built form of the vase invites the viewer to examine it from many angles and to consider how it was made—in this case, by reusing material that someone else might just throw away. The cost of porcelain clay doesn’t allow me to toss any of it out.

The Crab is a sea creature that I like, the Crab is a delicacy that can be eaten. When a crab loses a leg, it can regenerate the limbs. Crabs' colors depend on what parts of the ocean they are from. They can also defend the sea from predators, like other crabs and squids. They are unique creatures, Sometimes the crab shells are hard and sometimes soft. Its nice to see crabs on the beach.

Recycled Junktion

By Edmound Veyna, Fine Arts Instructor

The idea for this art project for the Junktion Art Show at the Helm’s Design Center involves recycled items such as canvas, beads, buttons, rhinestones, seashells, collected objects, etc., creating a collaged piece of artwork.

All the artists created their artwork with images such as landscapes, oceans, skies, trees, flowers, and more on canvas with the use of acrylic paint.

In this day and age recycling is important so waste doesn’t accumulate in our trash and landfills. It gives everyone a sense of protecting our planet and helps keep the environment beautiful.

and Amoura Gonzalez, Assistant Director of Visual Arts

In our Saturday art class, the artists have been learning to create Mirror patterns and Spanish style ceramics. Inspired by Talavera style pots that come from Mexico, the class came up with multiple designs and patterns on different recycled pots and cups that were from both previous and current ceramics classes. Combining these two, the artists were able to explore ceramic and patterning techniques.

Mysterious Woman with a piece of Chicken, Stapler and a Screwdriver

We started by writing a list of random objects from our imagination. I came up with the ideas of creating a stapler, a piece of chicken, a screwdriver and a very mysterious woman. The Man with a Blue Tie

Jill Robinson
11" x 9" x 9"
Stoneware Sculptural Vessel
$800

The title of this piece is Man with a Blue Tie.  Blue represents feelings of loyalty, trust, steadiness, calm, but also distance, sadness, and coolness; the color of ice. Red represents passion, love, and joy, but also suffering, injury, anger, and rage; the color of fire.

The junction of blue and red and the experience of our emotional lives is the experience of transformation. Every day, like putting on a tie or wearing a shirt, this transformation is happening if we choose to feel.

Intertwine
Melissa Falco Williams
Acrylic and fiber paste on canvas
12” x 12”
$225

In this abstract painting, I found myself exploring the concept of what holds us together during times of anxiety and vulnerability, particularly in the face of the world's climate. The protective layers we once relied on feel insufficient when we are confronted with single-minded decisions that seek to break us down, creating environments that amplify our uncertainty about ourselves and the world around us. The word 'intertwine' resonates deeply, as it reflects our awareness of how the threads of humanity are tested in their strength and endurance amid weakness and desperation. We are like broken and twisted threads in a fabric, worn daily by those who believe in fairness, justice, equality, and the protection of family and community values. Each thread clings to one another, telling its own story while contributing to a larger narrative of existence, reminding us that even in our struggles, we are interconnected and resilient.

A Gentle Glow
Melissa Falco Williams
Mixed media, Acrylic, fiber paste, recycled cardboard and paper on canvas
12” x 12”
$225

As the darkness of night begins to retreat, a small speck of light emerges on the horizon, delicate yet resolute. This tiny beacon, a soft golden hue, flickers gently like a whisper of hope, promising the warmth and possibilities of a new day. It pierces through the lingering shadows, casting a gentle glow that dances across the landscape, awakening the world from its slumber. This humble light, though small, carries the weight of potential, inviting the dawn and symbolizes renewal, a reminder that even the faintest glimmer can herald the start of something beautiful, igniting the sky with the promise of fresh beginnings and endless opportunities

Belmar: Vibrance Lost
Nicole Comp
19 1/2" x 19 1/2"
Collage
SOLD

From the early 1900s to the early 1950s, an African American neighborhood in Santa Monica flourished along Pico Boulevard near the Pacific Ocean. A key junction, north of Pico and east of Main Street, was referred to as Belmar Triangle. Today these blocks no longer exist; using eminent domain, the city of Santa Monica cleared the site in 1953 and built a Civic Auditorium. A poignant reflection on what is considered junk and what is actually of value, this piece represents the vitality of the neighborhood in the first half of the 20th century.

Elements used to construct the piece include: small pieces of leftover fabric and discarded clothes, a salvaged zipper, wood, compressed board and corrugated cardboard previously used as packing materials, individual mosaic tiles separated from the sheet, nails retrieved from a construction site, a found rock, shells from a broken necklace, biodegradable packing peanuts, wires from old headphones, pieces of a box that contained markers.

Handled Vase

David Keeps
Ceramics
$125

The origin of this large vase began in a slop bucket. At the ceramic studio where I work, clay is recycled—yay!—so people just chuck unwanted clay into a giant garbage can filled with water. I often peek inside and sometimes find that other artists have thrown away wheel-thrown and hand-built pots, so I rescue them and make them my own. For this particular vessel, I built it taller and added a handle at the top. As I was shaping it, I accidentally made a hole in the neck—oops—so I created a series of holes and threaded twine made from recycled silk sari fabric through it. The result is a piece that merges the ancient material of clay with a contemporary appreciation for recycling.

Tearing me up
Connie Roldan
H.8 W. 5. D. 5.9
Clay, oxides and underglazes

In 'Tearing Me Up', a young romantic sits on a rock holding flowers, meant as a gift for the object of his affection, and a book, perhaps of poetry, feeling heartbroken for the first time as his affections were not returned.  For the first time, he questions his own worth; feeling raw and exposed to the whims of another person. Hopefully, the boy depicted here was let down easy.

Dumpster Diving

by David Keeps, Ceramics Instructor

On a recent visit to a ceramics studio in the Downtown Arts District of Los Angeles, I discovered a dumpster filled with discarded unglazed pottery. “Can I pick your trash?”  I asked. With the studio’s permission and In the best tradition of “inside out,” I reached in and gathered dozens of recyclable dishes, pots and mugs, pulled them out and put them in my trunk. Back in the IO Studio at L.A. GOAL, our members lovingly upcycled these unloved objects with their imaginative color sense, patterns and illustrations.

Through the Rhododendron
Bethany Proctor
10” x 8”
Mixed media collage
(stickers on paper)
$100

This mixed media collage explores “junk” as both physical debris and living matter—what we leave behind, what grows from it, and what it still carries. Made entirely from stickers, it blends retro imagery with antique textures, household relics, and flashes of mid-century charm. Celestial elements like planets and clocks suggest a looping sense of time, where memory and matter orbit each other. The composition feels both chaotic and curated, like a dream assembled from a drawer of forgotten things. Through the Rhododendron evokes the idea of moving through overgrowth—both literal and symbolic—as a passage into memory, contamination, and transformation.

Dani Samson
10" x 10" (12" x 12" framed)
mixed media on paper
$150

My mixed media artwork harnesses the energy and intricate beauty of “junk” by uplifting the used, the remnant, and the seemingly mundane to a place of greater visibility and significance.
By recontextualizing found objects and scrap materials, I foster curiosity and wonder about their forms, histories, and renewed purposes. Each piece becomes a dialogue between past and present—a reflection on life’s ephemeral nature and our human tendency to find meaning in it.
My process often involves creating artworks from repurposed materials, deconstructing them, and then rebuilding entirely new pieces from fragments of those earlier works and other found objects. This ongoing cycle of destruction, transformation, and rebirth leads me to contemplate my own spirituality and the cyclical nature of the universe.

Unconventional Tools

By Amoura Gonzalez, Assistant Director of Visual Arts

Unconventional Tools is a project that focuses on creating artwork without having to use traditional tools like our brushes. In this project, we worked with tools we found around us- Forks, Plastic knives, Spoons, and Sponges.

The artists layered paint down to create textured shapes and objects to put together these abstract pieces, creating places that we long to be.

Mixed Medium on canvas with acrylic, beads, pearls and rhinestones.

The reason why I chose this picture is because it shows an Adobe house which is the shed that is located in a meadow by the mountains. It is where a Mexican family lives. I use the acrylic paint first, I painted the grass in the meadow to be orange and brown, and for the bushes and trees also. The bushes are green on the right side making this an autumn season. Then I used acrylic markers to add detail on the grass and also to cover the pencil lines to make this painting artistic. I finished the painting by using colored beads and rhinestones glued onto the canvas. There is where we have an Adobe house located in the state of New Mexico.

My work is a multimedia exploration and re-presentation of the natural world. Investigating our perceptions, valuations and representations, I examine the entwined relationships between both natural and crafted objects. Through mixed-media, I explore ecological themes by repurposing discarded materials and presenting natural symbols of contemplation.
My work fosters empathy and elevates awareness of our interconnected web, spotlighting how our worlds intertwine.

Los Cerritos, Chipotle
Jeffrey Hansen
Four Panels each 7" x 10" total of one 48" artwork
Color pencil, gouache, graphite, ink, and tea on mixed media paper

These semi-abstract works on paper tackle figure-ground reversal, gestural abstraction, and story telling. Drawing from Indian miniature painting, Native American textiles, Japanese Scrolls, and Aztec codices, the imagery compares written word, woven patterns, and gestural brushstroke across a series of panels. Experimental mark-making forms a free association narrative. The works were partly created en plein air at a Chipotle restaurant.

Collage and Acrylic Paint Print

I use my art making to explore and expand on the hand that life has dealt me. I try to live by the saying “Jack of all trades, master of some”. I'm always wanting to learn new mediums and combine what I’ve known for years. Even though I’m a painter through and through, if I see another medium I wanna learn I figure out how I can create in that form until I am satisfied with the result. I am also a big believer in art as therapy. So much so that I named a show I had in 2020 “Art is Therapy”.  A show all about a body of work I did in 2018 reflecting on a previous manic state. I tried to dissect why I created what I did, and how I felt while creating the new works in response.

In addition to its attractive ornamental effect, it may serve as a reminder of the cyclical nature of spring and rebirth. With imagination and a thoughtful consideration of materials, Junktion is the meeting point where junk assumes a new function as art.

Vulnerability
Elaine Hartman
Mixed media, Watercolor and colored pencils
11” x 14”

Opening up can be very difficult and scary. Exposing yourself and your fear causes worry and the feelings of judgment and exclusion from living life. I want to be able to walk again, I don’t know where my feet are? This is not me, I want to be able to feel them again. I want my old life back, my friends, my art, and L.A. GOAL. I want to be normal and to go places, feel free to move around and see the people I care about, because it’s important to me and who I know I am on the inside.

Mostly bunnies, birds and fish!
Andrew Yin
9” x 12”
Acrylic on Canvas
$175

One lovely sunny and warm day a whole bunch of bunnies came out of the den. They warn the fish because some birds would try to eat them. The birds almost ate the fish because the fish swam very fast. After that the bunnies come to the fish because the fish is left alone. The fish's mother and dad passed away. One of the bunnies asks the fish something like this: "What is your name?" "Kevin." "I'm Stacy." Like six and half years later on they got married. One of the birds named Nick is a reverend. Kevin and Stacy went on their HONEY MOON! They went to Las Vegas to go there and they came back like a month later on. The next day Kevin went to work and he has to work very late. The other bunny named Erica that works with him has to leave for a meeting that is very personal. Javier the crow is in charge of the meeting. His mom is Mexican and his dad is American. Nancy, Tim and Kiara the herons are the assistants. Stacy works from home and she makes costumes for movies and television shows.

The other bunnies will take care of the kids when Kevin and Stacy are working.

Kevin and Stacy's kids' names are Miles, Jessica and Liz. The years go back and now Kevin and Stacy become grandparents and they have like seven grandkids.
