About Us
L.A. GOAL was founded in 1969 by a group of parents whose teenagers with developmental disabilities were graduating from high school. The teens had no clear path ahead of them. There were few, if any programs for adults with developmental disabilities at that time. The parents knew their children longed for independence and employment but lacked the needed skills and self esteem to move forward, so they created L.A. GOAL. At first, L.A. GOAL was as a social club with informal lessons on the essentials of daily life including reading, writing, grooming and hygiene, understanding money and, basics of social interaction.
Early on we recognized that the best way to provide the most appropriate and needed services was to listen to our adult members with developmental disabilities. They could tell us what they needed, evaluate programs and make recommendations. We found that involvement in this manner allows them to learn and practice self advocacy. It gives them a voice and sense of ownership of the programs and assists in their quest for independence and employment. They formed a formal Member's Governing Board with a Treasury and elect two "Members Representatives" that sit on L.A. GOAL's Board of Director
We provide consultation, also free of charge, to qualified corporations, groups and individuals who are interested in starting agencies to provide services to adults with developmental disabilities, including groups from Denmark and Japan. We also provide consultation to members of the entertainment industry that include roles for people with developmental disabilities to promote a more accurate portrayal and foster a greater understanding of them. Our Executive Director, Petite Konstantin, MPA, was the technical consultant on the movie "I am Sam" starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Sean Penn.
