L.A. GOAL’s first book: Disabled Fables, Aesop’s fables re-told and illustrated by artists with developmental disabilities, has been published by Star Bright Books.
Sean Penn wrote the forward after studying at L.A. GOAL for his role in the movie i am sam.
Disabled Fables began with the concept of “storyboarding” a method used in film-making to show the progression of visual events. While the concept of sequencing was difficult for the artists to grasp at first, they began to understand it when they studied Aesop’s Fables. Not only were the stories familiar and accessible, their timeless messages were easy for our artists to relate to.
Each artist chose a fable that was personally meaningful one that resonated within his or her life. Twelve L.A.GOAL artists rewrote their fables in their own words and explained how the story related to their own lives. They decided how many images (storyboards) were needed: some chose to create many illustrations, others chose a single one. The artists worked on Disabled Fables for two years, and they were paid for their work with funds raised by L.A. GOAL.
We hope the community will not only enjoy the stunning visuals and poignant stories in Disabled Fables, but that it will also give them a better understanding of people with developmental disabilities.
