Outsider Art

Outsider Art is considered to be creative works produced by people who have little or no formal art training. These artists are often from isolated or marginalized populations. Freed from the formal conventions of the art world, their work is typically described as visionary, naïve or innocent.  Although each artist is driven by a different influence – God, disabilities, etc. - the common thread is that they create for themselves (or for their immediate communities) without regards to the dictates of the mainstream art market.

Outsider Art has struggled to be recognized and acknowledged as a legitimate style. It has both critics and collectors, but for those who respond to it on a visceral level, it has the power to stand on its own as art.

The L.A. GOAL Artists with developmental disabilities, featured through our Inside Out Productions Studio, start off as “outsiders” with no formal art training. Nevertheless, through the mediums of paint, clay and textiles, they create authentically original work which exemplifies all that is unique about Outsider Art.
